ipflohi,

Does some one know where I can find good Info (books, pictures, history) about Worksop Manor, the now lost unfinished palace of the Howard dukes of Norfolk.

Thx in advance,

ipflo

PeterIpflo,
do you have much information on this site ?
castleukHi
Any idea of the where abouts of the palace? I was in Worksop a couple of weeks ago looking at the castle and priory gatehouse.
Yours Chris
ipfloHi

I learnt about this house in the book 'the british country house in the eighteenth century', which contains some text about it and a picture of the house, how it should look when finished, as a palace not unworthy for a prince or king on the continent. In the end only one wing was built and then the duke died, his heir (from another branch of the howard dynasty) decided not to finish the house.

Also I have found in the meantime some more information on the site, probably of one of the 'best' sites on the topic you can find on the net:
http://www.nottshistory.org.uk/white1875/worksop_manor1.htm
http://www.antiqueprints.com/Images/af/D9411.JPG

As I understand it was in or nearby Worksop.

I also found a picture from 1955 on, a bit strange as I understood the house was lost:
http://www.francisfrith.com/UK/search/addprod.asp?NegNumber=W278049&pagetitle=Photograph+of+WORKSOP,%20MANOR+C1955

so if some one knows more, I am interested. Maybe there exists a little booklet about it. And does some know what has really happend with the one wing, does it still exist, or is it destroyed after 1955. Does the park still exists, or has the estate vanished at all.

castleukHi
Worksop Manor and the park is on the OS Landranger 120 SK 570-780, to the south-east is Castle Farm and Manor Hills, next time I'm in the area I'll take a look.
Yours Chris www.castleuk.net
The castle location website
PeterHi Ipflo,
I haven't found out much more.
But a lot of mentions are about Worksop Palace 'Gate House'. So perhaps this is the only surviving building on the site ?
One strange site just gives a ground plan of it for hire !
Will keep looking ... the Gwrych Castle thing is still in hand for you. May even have a postcard or photo to send.
